RWE evaluates second gas peaker plant at Gundremmingen site
Energy company RWE is evaluating the construction of a second gas peaker plant near the decommissioned Gundremmingen nuclear power plant site. This potential project follows plans for an initial 120 MW hydrogen-capable gas engine plant designed to manage peak loads and support the energy transition.
The Gundremmingen site is currently undergoing significant transformation. In addition to the decommissioning of the former nuclear plant, one of Germany’s largest battery storage facilities is under construction. Furthermore, the startup Proxima Fusion plans to produce components for a test fusion reactor at the location starting next year, with long-term goals for a commercial fusion reactor. The German government has also designated the site as a participant in two of the country’s three new competence centers for fusion technology.
