RWE energy transition projects in Germany

Overview

Energy company RWE is transitioning former power generation sites in Germany toward new energy technologies.

At the Voerde coal power plant, RWE is demolishing the boiler house and denitrification plants to prepare the site for a hydrogen-ready gas and steam turbine plant. This facility, which aims for an 850-megawatt capacity by 2030, follows the previous removal of the site’s cooling tower and chimney.

Simultaneously, RWE is evaluating the construction of a second gas peaker plant at the decommissioned Gundremmingen nuclear site. This potential project would complement an initial 120 MW hydrogen-capable gas engine plant. The Gundremmingen site is also hosting large-scale battery storage construction and fusion technology development.
