Ljubiša Karović survives Ryanair window failure after being partially sucked out
On July 10, Ryanair flight FR1879 departed Thessaloniki for Memmingen when a cabin window shattered at roughly 15,000‑16,000 ft. Debris from the right engine is believed to have struck the window, creating a sudden decompression that pulled 61‑year‑old Serbian businessman Ljubiša Karović partially out of the aircraft.
Karović’s wife, Svetlana Grković Maksimović, and several fellow passengers grabbed his legs and pulled him back into the cabin after about two minutes. He suffered burns to his face, arm and shoulder, bleeding from his nose and mouth, and was fitted with a neck brace. The aircraft landed safely in Thessaloniki.
Ryanair’s only response was to send re‑booking emails to Karović’s son; the airline did not make direct contact with the victim. Investigators are examining the cause of the window failure, and safety experts stress the importance of seat‑belt use and following crew instructions during decompression events. Similar incidents include a 2018 Southwest flight where a passenger was partially sucked out and died, and a 2024 Alaska Airlines door‑panel blowout.
