Ryanair FR1879 window blowout investigation
Overview
On 10 July 2026 Ryanair flight FR1879, operated by Malta Air on a Boeing 737‑800, suffered rapid cabin decompression minutes after departing Thessaloniki when debris from the right‑hand CFM56‑7B engine struck a passenger window. The shattered pane partially ejected 61‑year‑old Ljubiša Karović of Serbia; his wife Svetlana Grković and fellow travellers held him for about five minutes before he was pulled back inside. Oxygen masks deployed automatically, the pilots declared an emergency and returned to Thessaloniki, landing safely. Karović was treated at AHEPA Hospital for neck, shoulder, friction‑burn injuries and severe shock and remains hospitalized in Greece.
Ryanair cancelled the flight, supplied a replacement aircraft for the remaining passengers and issued a statement confirming the incident. Video from the flight showed a missing engine blade and damage to the engine casing. The investigation, initially led by the Macedonian civil‑aviation authority, was transferred on 13 July 2026 to the U.S. NTSB and now includes the Greek accident‑investigation agency, France’s BEA, the ICAO Committee for the Investigation of Air Accidents, and Maltese, Irish, Macedonian and Serbian authorities, together with Boeing and CFM International. Preliminary NTSB findings still point to a fragment from the right‑hand engine as the likely cause, though the exact mechanism remains unconfirmed. Boeing has pledged full cooperation, and the aircraft remains grounded pending a comprehensive inspection.
