Ryanair Boeing 737 window breaks, passenger nearly ejected
A Ryanair Boeing 737‑800 operating flight FR187 from Thessaloniki to Memmingen suffered a broken passenger‑cabin window shortly after take‑off on 10 July 2026. The fracture caused rapid decompression; a 61‑year‑old Serbian passenger seated beside the damaged pane was partially pulled out of the aircraft. His wife, along with two other travellers, held him back while cabin crew deployed oxygen masks. The pilot returned to Thessaloniki, where the plane landed safely and the passenger was taken to hospital with abrasions, neck injuries and shock.
The incident is now being investigated by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) at the request of the Macedonian air‑safety committee, with participation from the Greek and French accident agencies. Preliminary reports suggest a fragment of the right‑hand engine may have detached and struck the window, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed.
Records show the same aircraft had to abort a flight to Sarajevo the previous day and return to Thessaloniki for an unexplained technical issue. Boeing has pledged cooperation with the investigation.
