Ryanair engine failure shatters window and injures passenger during Greek takeoff FAST-MOVING
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released preliminary findings regarding a July 10 incident involving a Ryanair Boeing 737-800 departing from Thessaloniki, Greece. An engine fan blade separation in the aircraft's No. 2 engine caused fragments to strike the fuselage and shatter a passenger cabin window.
The rapid decompression resulted in a 61-year-old passenger, Ljubiša Karović, being partially pulled through the broken window. Fellow passengers and crew managed to pull him back into the cabin. The passenger sustained neck and shoulder injuries as well as friction burns.
Investigators discovered bird remains inside the engine, suggesting a possible bird strike during takeoff. The NTSB noted that four suspected bird strikes had been reported for this engine in the 12 months preceding the accident. The CFM engine, a joint venture between Safran and General Electric, had been inspected in May with no issues found. The aircraft, which was bound for Memmingen, Germany, performed an emergency landing in Greece.
