S-80 submarines Isaac Peral and Narciso Monturiol sail together in Cartagena
The first two submarines of the S-80 class, the Isaac Peral (S-81) and the Narciso Monturiol (S-82), have sailed together for the first time in the waters of Cartagena. This simultaneous navigation marks a significant milestone for the S-80 program and the modernization of the Spanish Navy's submarine fleet.
The Isaac Peral is already operational within the Navy, having been delivered in November 2023. The Narciso Monturiol, the second of four submarines built by Navantia, is currently undergoing sea trials to verify its systems and platform performance. This follows its recent first static immersion near the La Algameca Naval Base.
The S-80 program is designed to enhance Spain's strategic autonomy and deterrence capabilities through advanced domestic defense technology. These vessels provide specialized capacities in surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence, naval warfare, and special operations, characterized by high levels of discretion and autonomy.
