Spain S-80 submarine program development

Overview

The Spanish S-80 submarine program has reached new milestones in the development and testing of its fleet. In late July 2026, Navantia completed the first static dive of the S-82 ‘Narciso Monturiol’ near the La Algameca Naval Base in Cartagena. This test was conducted to verify hull behavior, ballast-tank flooding, and static stability.

Following these trials, the S-82 ‘Narciso Monturiol’ and the already operational S-81 ‘Isaac Peral’ sailed together for the first time in Cartagena. This simultaneous navigation marks a significant step in the modernization of the Spanish Navy. The S-80 program, managed by Navantia in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, aims to enhance Spain’s strategic autonomy and deterrence capabilities through advanced domestic defense technology.
