S-Bahn Rhein-Main unveils redesigned trains and new color scheme

Deutsche Bahn and the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsbund (RMV) have unveiled a redesigned concept for the S-Bahn Rhein-Main fleet. The first modernized train, a Class 430 unit, was presented at Frankfurt Central Station on September 21, 2026.

The redesign focuses on increasing passenger capacity by 15%, bringing the total to 559 passengers per train. To achieve this, the first-class compartments have been removed in favor of a more open layout. The new interior includes funnel-shaped entrance areas to accelerate boarding and exiting, larger information monitors, 34 power outlets per vehicle, and dedicated zones for wheelchairs, strollers, and bicycles.

The exterior aesthetic is also changing; the traditional “traffic red” will be replaced by a color scheme of S-Bahn green, RMV blue, light gray, and anthracite. The modernization project aims to update all 98 trains of this type by summer 2029, with plans to eventually modernize older series within the region's 210-vehicle S-Bahn fleet.
