S-Bahn Rhein-Main fleet modernization

Overview

Deutsche Bahn and the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) have initiated a modernization project for the S-Bahn Rhein-Main fleet, specifically targeting 98 ET430 series vehicles.

The redesign introduces a new exterior color scheme consisting of S-Bahn green, RMV blue, light gray, and anthracite. Interior modifications focus on increasing passenger capacity by 15% through a new seating concept and the removal of first-class compartments. To improve efficiency, the trains will feature funnel-shaped entrance areas to facilitate faster boarding and exiting, alongside updated information monitors and 34 power outlets per vehicle.

Following the presentation of the first modernized Class 430 unit at Frankfurt Central Station, the updated trains are expected to enter service on lines S1, S4, S8, and S9. The project aims to complete the modernization of these 98 trains by summer 2029.
