SA20 auction: Jason Rowles tops bids as franchises finalize 2027 squads
The SA20 Season 5 player auction, held in Johannesburg on October 7, 2026, has finalized squads for the upcoming 2027 tournament. The auction featured a mix of veteran international stars and emerging talent.
In a standout moment, 18-year-old South African all-rounder Jason Rowles became the most expensive player, secured by the Joburg Super Kings for R2.9 million following an intense bidding war. Other major signings for the Joburg Super Kings include former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis and West Indies veteran Kieron Pollard.
MI Cape Town also made significant moves, securing Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for R2.6 million and West Indies power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer. The Pretoria Capitals added Temba Bavuma to their roster, while Rassie van der Dussen will continue with the Capitals.
Due to BCCI policy, no active Indian cricketers were included in the auction, as Indian players are only permitted to participate in overseas franchise leagues after retiring from all forms of domestic and international cricket in India. The SA20 season is scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21, 2027.
