Saarland launches housing checkers to combat rent exploitation
The state government of Saarland is launching a new initiative called ‘Wohnungschecker’ (Housing Checkers) to combat rent exploitation, problematic living conditions, and benefit fraud. Starting October 1, 2026, the project will establish a dedicated contact point in the Neunkirchen district to systematically investigate suspicious rental arrangements.
The initiative aims to identify issues such as excessive rents, overcrowded apartments, multiple rentals of the same unit, false information regarding property size or condition, and the misuse of registration addresses. It also targets potential benefit abuse and sham employment. When reasonable suspicion is established, cases will be forwarded to the appropriate internal or external investigative authorities.
Social Minister Magnus Jung stated that the project builds on experiences from existing task forces and investigation groups in Saarbrücken and Völklingen. The goal is twofold: to prevent the misuse of social benefits and to protect vulnerable individuals from unscrupulous landlords who profit from substandard or overpriced housing.
