In Duisburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, officials conducted inspections of dilapidated buildings to investigate potential welfare abuse. During one operation, investigators found discrepancies between registered residents and those actually living in a property, noting that some individuals receiving child benefits and basic security payments were no longer at the address. Duisburg Mayor Sören Link stated that such potential fraud “undermine[s] public acceptance of the welfare state.”

In Saarland, the state government announced the launch of the ‘Wohnungschecker’ (Housing Checkers) initiative, scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026. Based in the Neunkirchen district, this project will systematically investigate suspicious rental arrangements, including excessive rents, overcrowded housing, and the misuse of registration addresses. Social Minister Magnus Jung noted the project aims to prevent the misuse of social benefits while protecting vulnerable people from “unscrupulous landlords.”
