Germany's transport network faces widespread road and rail closures
Multiple German cities are experiencing extensive traffic disruptions due to infrastructure works. In Troisdorf, temporary road closures on Noldestraße and other streets have been extended until early August 2026. The Schunter Bridge in Braunschweig is closed to motor vehicles from 3 August to 7 August 2026, while pedestrians and cyclists may still use it.
Rail services are also affected. The RB 25 regional train between Cologne and Lüdenscheid is scheduled to resume on 8 August 2026, but station modernisation delays will keep some sections limited. Between 7 August and 9 September 2026, trains on the Kaiserslautern‑Saarbrücken corridor are suspended and replaced by buses.
Major highways face closures as well. The A40 autobahn in the Ruhr region is shut from 23 July 20:00 to 30 July 05:00 for a 5.8‑km resurfacing project. In Bremen, the A1 and A27 are expected to see severe congestion this weekend due to holiday traffic and ongoing works on the Weser Bridge. The Wulfbach bridge in Mühlheim is being renovated, with pedestrian and cyclist access planned to resume in early September 2026. The historic Afferder Bach bridge near Unna remains fully closed, with reconstruction pushed to 2027. In Montabaur, the final 20 m of a city‑creek pipe system will require a full road closure on Steinweg from 10 August 2026 for up to six weeks.
Additional projects include a second construction phase on Leipzig’s main train station tram tracks and the demolition of the Hardenberg bridge on the A40 in Mülheim, scheduled for replacement by 2028.
