Germany 2026 transport disruptions

Entities: Germany · Martin Schlechter · Yvonne Schäfer · Thannhausen · Leipzig tram network

Overview

Throughout summer 2026 Germany continues extensive road and rail construction, causing widespread closures and detours. Earlier work on the B300 around Thannhausen and the B176 in the Sömmerda district remains in place, with traffic rerouted onto state roads. Temporary closures on Noldestraße in Troisdorf and the Schunter Bridge in Braunschweig persist into early August, while the RB 25 regional line is set to resume on 8 August and the Kaiserslautern‑Saarbrücken rail corridor stays replaced by buses until 9 September. Major highway works include the A40 autobahn shutdown in the Ruhr (23 July 20:00 – 30 July 05:00) and congestion on the A1 and A27 around Bremen due to Weser Bridge repairs. Additional projects reported in late July add the demolition of a damaged bridge on the A14 near Grimma (closed 31 July – 1 August) and resurfacing of Kreisstraße K6625 near Craupe (4 – 22 August). The Wulfbach bridge in Mühlheim is being renovated with pedestrian and cyclist access expected early September, while a six‑week closure of Steinweg in Montabaur begins 10 August for pipe work. Further work includes a second phase on Leipzig’s main train‑station tram tracks and the planned demolition of the Hardenberg bridge on the A40, slated for replacement by 2028.

On 31 July 2026 a brush fire beneath the Theodor‑Heuss Bridge in Mannheim forced the closure of the right‑hand lane of the A6 towards Sandhofen. The lane was reopened after firefighters extinguished the blaze, which covered an area roughly the size of a football field. Earlier that evening a suspicious object on the nearby Konrad‑Adenauer Bridge prompted a brief full closure; the object was later identified as non‑hazardous and removed, allowing traffic to resume.
