Saavedra Mayor Matías Nebot faces council vote after investigation

The investigative commission of the Saavedra Deliberative Council has concluded its inquiry into the conduct and fitness of Mayor Matías Nebot. The investigation was initiated following public statements made by Nebot in July regarding his recovery from substance abuse, during which he stated, “I have been 308 days without consuming.”

The commission, which included a probationary stage and the formulation of charges, unanimously voted on October 8 to end its tasks, lift the secrecy of the proceedings, and make the full file available to council members. The inquiry sought to determine if the mayor's personal health situation resulted in breaches of official duties, such as prolonged absences or administrative difficulties.

Nebot’s defense has requested that the investigation be archived, arguing that the proceedings are deficient and that no specific irregular act of government was identified. He maintains that acknowledging a personal health situation does not constitute grounds for removal. The Deliberative Council has scheduled a special session for Friday, October 23, at 9:00 AM, where councilors will vote on the gravity of the investigated facts.
