Saavedra Mayor Matías Nebot investigation
Overview
An investigative commission of the Saavedra Deliberative Council has concluded an inquiry into the conduct and fitness of Mayor Matías Nebot. The investigation was prompted by Nebot’s July statements regarding his recovery from substance abuse, specifically his claim, “I have been 308 days without consuming.”
The commission sought to determine if the mayor’s health situation led to administrative difficulties or breaches of official duties. While the commission voted to lift the secrecy of its proceedings and make the file available to council members, Nebot’s defense has requested the investigation be archived, arguing that no specific irregular acts of government were identified.
Political tension has increased following the appearance of provocative posters at the entrance of the Deliberative Council asking, “Mati, who is selling?”. This incident occurred just prior to a scheduled special session on October 23, where council members are set to vote on the gravity of the investigated facts, a move that could lead to institutional proceedings or his removal from office.
