Sabah coastal residents urged to stay calm as tsunami warning follows Mindanao quake

A magnitude‑7.9 earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines early on 8 June, leading the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to issue an early tsunami alert for Sabah’s east coast. Officials forecast waves up to 0.4 m between 10:30 am and noon and activated sirens in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu.

Sabah’s Fire and Rescue Department moved personnel, rescue boats and safety gear to monitor the shoreline from Jalan Traulsen to Tinagat. Checks showed conditions normal and no damage reported. Residents were told to stay calm, avoid the beach, obey any relocation orders and obtain information only from official channels.
