Sabesp repairs major water leak in São Paulo's Butantã district

A major water leak on Rua Érico Veríssimo in the Butantã district of São Paulo caused significant water spraying and local shortages on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

Sabesp, the state sanitation company, confirmed that its teams have contained the leak and completed repairs to the supply network. The company expects water service to be gradually normalized by the end of the night. Sabesp advised residents to use water consciously during the restoration period, noting that properties with at least 24 hours of water storage capacity will be less affected.

In response to aging infrastructure, where some pipes have operated for over 80 years, Sabesp stated it is accelerating network modernization. The company is investing approximately R$ 1 billion annually since 2024 to reduce losses through pipe replacement and new monitoring technologies, with a planned total investment of R$ 9.7 billion through 2029.
