SADC Summit in Durban focuses on regional integration and infrastructure

The 46th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened in Durban, South Africa, on August 17, under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa. The summit's agenda focuses on ambitious regional goals, including infrastructure development, economic integration, the strengthening of regional value chains, and the transformation of critical minerals.

Key priorities include modernizing ports, railways, roads, and border posts to reduce transport costs and facilitate trade for landlocked nations such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. However, the region faces significant hurdles, including insufficient infrastructure, energy deficits, trade barriers, and the challenge of securing necessary funding to move from political commitments to concrete projects.

On the sidelines of the summit, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo held a bilateral meeting with President Ramaphosa to discuss historical cooperation. Discussions are expected to touch upon regional security, including the situation in Cabo Delgado, as well as developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Madagascar.
