Durban 2026 industrialisation initiatives

In mid‑July 2026, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was slated to attend a Special Economic Zones (SEZ) awards gala in Durban, recognising over R31 billion of investment and 28,000 jobs created by the nation’s twelve SEZs. The event was followed by a conference led by Deputy President Paul Mashatile, aimed at strengthening SEZ governance, mobilising further industrial investment and leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area.

A week later, Durban was confirmed as the venue for the 46th SADC Ordinary Summit and the 9th SADC Industrialisation Week, scheduled for early August 2026. The gatherings will focus on regional industrialisation, trade integration and pharmaceutical quality standards, with South Africa taking over the SADC chairmanship for the coming year. Municipal upgrades, including a R11.9 million renovation of bathroom facilities, were accelerated to accommodate Ramaphosa’s attendance and address recent xenophobia concerns. Together, the events underscore Durban’s role as a hub for Southern African economic cooperation and industrial growth in 2026.
