Safe Haven Baby Box initiatives expand in Mobile and Brookhaven

Efforts to expand the availability of Safe Haven Baby Boxes are progressing in both Mobile, Alabama, and Brookhaven, Mississippi. These specialized, ventilated bassinets allow for the safe and confidential surrender of infants by parents unable to care for them, without risk of prosecution. Once a baby is placed in the box, an alarm alerts emergency responders to retrieve the infant immediately.

In Mobile, officials are planning the installation of a third box, which is proposed for Fire Station 19 on Azalea Road.

In Brookhaven, the King’s Daughters Medical Center Foundation has donated $5,000 toward the installation of a box at the Brookhaven Central Fire Station. This follows an initial $5,000 donation from the Bank of Brookhaven. The project requires a total of $30,000 in donations before the box can be installed. Mississippi currently has approximately 10 such boxes in operation.
