Seoul baby box humanitarian initiative

Overview

The baby box initiative at Jusarang Church in Seoul, South Korea, has protected more than 2,000 infants since its establishment in 2009. Founded by Pastor Lee Jong-rak, the project utilizes a heated box built into a concrete wall to prevent infants from being abandoned in life-threatening outdoor conditions.

When a child is placed in the box, sensors alert staff members who are on duty 24/7 to move the infant to a secure care room. The initiative also provides counseling and support to parents, such as supplies for single mothers, in an effort to prevent abandonment. Despite its success, the facility continues to face challenges regarding financial and human resources.
