Safety crises reported in El Salvador and Ecuador
In El Salvador, motorcycle fatalities have reached critical levels in 2026. Between January 1 and October 4, 488 motorcyclists died in road accidents, nearly matching the 498 deaths recorded during the entirety of 2025. Data from the National Road Safety Observatory (ONASEVI) indicates a 34.1% increase in fatalities compared to the same period last year. Additionally, injuries rose by 32%, with 4,130 people hurt, and total motorcycle accidents increased by 26.6%. Authorities cite driver distraction, lane invasion, and speeding as primary causes.
Meanwhile, Ecuador is facing a severe security crisis characterized by a record number of homicides involving children and adolescents. During the first eight months of 2026, 430 minors were murdered, a trend linked to the exploitation of youth by organized crime groups. The Guayas province accounts for nearly half of these crimes, with 206 cases. While general national homicide rates saw a slight decrease of 6.4%, the targeted violence against minors and an 83% rise in disappearances highlight a deepening humanitarian and security challenge.
