Sahara Dust Arrives in Tamaulipas, Mexico

Mexico's Meteorología agency warned that the first pulse of Sahara dust for the 2026 season will begin reaching the state of Tamaulipas on Thursday. Initial concentrations are expected to be low, increasing to moderate levels on Saturday and Sunday. The dust plume will cause hazier horizons, reduce the chance of rainfall in the Gulf region, and bring sunnier afternoons with cooler nights.

The particle cloud is forecast to move across the Gulf of Mexico and the northeast of the country, pushing humidity westward where it may enhance precipitation. Health officials advised people with asthma or other respiratory conditions to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed, stay hydrated, protect their eyes and consider using masks.

The phenomenon is a regular summer event, with similar dust transits occurring each year between June and August.
