Authorities in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, demolished a mosque located within the District Collectorate complex on Saturday morning following a court order. The demolition occurred after a district court upheld a previous ruling by the City Magistrate declaring the structure an illegal encroachment on government land.

The action has sparked significant political controversy. Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan was placed under house arrest in Kairana to prevent her from traveling to the site, an act she described as a violation of democratic rights. Other opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav and Congress MP Imran Masood, criticized the timing and manner of the demolition, alleging constitutional violations.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi questioned the early-morning execution of the order and claimed the mosque predates the Collectorate building. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the demolition, describing it as a “reprehensible action” and part of a broader campaign to erase Islamic heritage.

Following the demolition, a 20-foot-deep well was discovered at the site. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been requested to examine the structure to determine its age and historical significance.
