Saharanpur mosque demolition and ancient well discovery

Overview

On September 5, authorities in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, demolished a mosque located within the District Collectorate complex. The action followed a court order from the District Judge's court, which upheld a July 17 ruling by the City Magistrate declaring the structure an illegal encroachment on approximately 315 square metres of government land. The court also imposed a compensation penalty of approximately Rs 6.41 crore on the occupants.

The demolition has triggered intense political and religious backlash. Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan was placed under house arrest in Kairana, criticizing the action as “dictatorial”. Opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, Asaduddin Owaisi, and Imran Masood, have questioned the pre-dawn timing and alleged violations of constitutional religious freedoms. Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Mahmood Madani questioned why the administration proceeded within hours of the court order, noting that the order did not explicitly direct immediate destruction. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind described the act as a “blot on democracy” and a “brazen and unforgivable act of sycophancy.” Internationally, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the demolition as a “reprehensible action.”

Following the demolition, workers discovered an ancient circular well, approximately 20 feet deep. On September 7, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology Department conducted an inspection of the structure. Archaeologists identified the well as being built with Lakhori bricks and lime-surkhi mortar, suggesting it dates back to the late medieval period.

In response to the demolition, a writ petition has been filed in the Allahabad High Court challenging the legality of the demolition orders. The ASI has collected samples from the site to further examine its historical status.
