Nigeria's Defence Minister Musa Calls for ECOWAS‑AES Security Alliance
Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa, arrived in Cotonou, Benin for a three‑day working visit. During the trip he urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to form a unified security alliance to defeat terrorism, dismantle cross‑border criminal networks and restore regional stability. Musa highlighted the need for stronger intelligence sharing, coordinated border management and enhanced maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
Benin’s Minister of National Defence, Gildas Agonkan, praised Nigeria’s role, noting the Nigerian Army’s distinguished performance at Benin’s National Day parade on 1 August. Musa met Nigerian troops stationed at Togbin and reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to troop welfare, operational effectiveness and capacity building. He was later hosted at Nigeria House by Ambassador Mopelola Ibrahim, who said Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement in Benin focuses on expanding bilateral trade and strengthening joint border surveillance. The visit is intended to deepen defence cooperation between Nigeria and Benin and to advance broader regional efforts against terrorism and trans‑national crime.
