Alliance of Sahel States launches first Confederation Parliament in Niamey
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has launched its first Confederation Parliament session in Niamey, Niger. The assembly includes 45 deputies, with 15 representatives each from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The session, presided over by Ousmane Bougouma, aims to establish a functional institutional framework for the confederation rather than a mere symbolic body.
Key agenda items for the parliamentary sessions include regional police cooperation, intelligence sharing, the free movement of people and goods, and the economic models and financing of media within the AES space. Three specialized commissions have been formed to address Defense and Security, Diplomacy, and Development.
In addition to the parliamentary developments, the AES is organizing the first Confederation Youth and Volunteerism Forum in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from August 28 to 30. The event expects to host approximately 1,000 young people from the member states to discuss regional integration and civic engagement. Furthermore, biometric identity card enrollment (CIB-AES) has begun in Arbinda, Burkina Faso, to facilitate easier movement for citizens of the alliance.
