SAIC Volkswagen launches ID. Era 5S plug-in hybrid sedan in China

SAIC Volkswagen has officially opened orders for the ID. Era 5S, a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedan developed through its joint venture. Positioned as a mid-size sedan, the vehicle is expected to play a key role in the brand's electrification strategy in China. The model features a starting price of approximately 115,900 RMB (around $17,200) for a limited time, with a formal presentation planned for the Chengdu Auto Show on August 21.

The ID. Era 5S is characterized by its fuel efficiency, reportedly consuming 2.8 liters per 100 km, and a range of up to 2,000 km. Its dimensions place it between the Volkswagen Jetta and Passat, making it a direct competitor to the BYD Seal 06.

Technologically, the sedan introduces advanced features including the 'Xingyun Smart Driving' system and 'Yunqi Smart Cabin' technology. It is noted as the first global Volkswagen model to feature high-level urban Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) support. The smart driving system was developed in collaboration with Zhuoyu Technology, Momenta, and CARIZON, utilizing Horizon Robotics chips.
