Volkswagen expands EV and PHEV lineup in China
Overview
In early August 2026, Volkswagen expanded its electric-vehicle portfolio for the Chinese market. At the Beijing Auto Show, the company unveiled the high-power ID Unyx 09 sedan. Specifications released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Technology reveal a rear-wheel-drive version (313 hp) and an all-wheel-drive version (503 hp), both limited to 200 km/h. The sedan utilizes CATL LFP batteries with capacities of 82 kWh or 95 kWh and features a “shark-nose” design. The launch also included a teaser for the ID Era 9X SUV, built on an 800-volt platform.
Through its FAW-Volkswagen joint venture, the company opened blind pre-orders on July 30 for the midsize ID Aura T6 electric SUV. This model features a 228-hp motor, a lithium-iron-phosphate battery, and the CEA electronic architecture. It is equipped with a 4-nm AI chip, the Carizon driver-assistance suite—including Highway NOA and Urban Pilot functions—and a digital cockpit featuring an augmented-reality head-up display and an 18-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system.
Furthering its localized development, Volkswagen's SAIC-Volkswagen subsidiary revealed the ID Era 5X SUV via China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology catalog. The ID Era 5X is the first production model to utilize the Compact Main Platform (CMP), co-developed with XPeng. It features a 155 kW motor, a CATL LFP battery, and a new LiDAR sensor for the “Xingyun” intelligent assisted driving system.
Expanding beyond pure EVs, SAIC Volkswagen has also opened orders for the ID Era 5S, a mid-size plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedan. Positioned as a competitor to the BYD Seal 06, the 5S reportedly offers a range of up to 2,000 km and features the “Xingyun Smart Driving” system and “Yunqi Smart Cabin” technology.
