Saint Francis of Assisi 800th anniversary marked by global religious celebrations

Religious communities and institutions worldwide are observing the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, who passed away on October 3, 1226. To mark this milestone, the Catholic Church has proclaimed 2026 as a Franciscan Jubilee Year, running from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027.

In Assisi, the epicenter of the celebrations, thousands of pilgrims and leaders are expected for events including the commemoration of the ‘Transitus’—the saint’s passage to eternal life. A global call has been issued for churches to ring their bells simultaneously to honor his legacy. The Jubilee Year, proclaimed by Pope Leo XIV, focuses on themes of peace, fraternity, and evangelical witness.

Various regional celebrations are taking place across Europe and beyond. In Italy, the Piceno Dioceses and cities like Policastro are hosting liturgical services, cultural meetings, and processions. In Portugal, towns like Alenquer are organizing community-focused spiritual and cultural activities. Other locations, including Spain, the Czech Republic, and Belgium, are also highlighting their Franciscan heritage through art, prayer, and commemorative events.
