Cardinal Matteo Zuppi begins humanitarian mission in Moscow
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the special envoy of Pope Leo XIV for Ukraine and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, has arrived in Moscow for a three-day humanitarian mission. The mission, running from September 27 to September 30, involves a series of meetings with Russian officials to discuss resolving humanitarian issues and finding solutions to the ongoing Ukrainian crisis.
Zuppi stated that the mission, confirmed by Pope Leo XIV, focuses on supporting efforts to address concerns regarding children, prisoner exchanges, and the challenges faced by civilians due to the conflict. He expressed a desire to develop dialogue to help end the suffering caused by the war. The Russian Ambassador to the Holy See, Ivan Soltanovsky, noted that the Cardinal is welcome in the capital.
In response to the diplomatic movement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed skepticism regarding Russia's intentions. Zelensky stated on social media that he does not believe Russia is preparing to end the war, accusing Vladimir Putin of using trivial excuses to avoid dialogue and continue fighting.
