Ongoing mediation efforts, led by Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, continue to focus on the release of prisoners and children taken by Russia. To support these goals and prevent a diplomatic impasse similar to one in 2023, Archbishop Gallagher is scheduled to visit Moscow from August 24 to 28, 2026. This mission, the first by the Vatican’s top diplomat to Russia since the 2022 invasion, aims to assess the political atmosphere ahead of a potential September visit by Cardinal Zuppi.

Gallagher is set to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on August 25 to discuss Holy See-Russia relations and international cooperation. The visit also carries religious weight; Gallagher intends to meet with representatives of the Moscow Patriarchate and the local Catholic community, and will preside over a Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on August 27. Additionally, the mission seeks to gauge the stance of Russian authorities regarding the appointment of a new Catholic Archbishop for Moscow.
