Saint Francis of Assisi: Global celebrations mark 800th anniversary
Global religious and cultural communities are observing the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. This milestone is marked by the Franciscan Jubilee, declared by Pope Leo XIV, which runs from January 2026 to January 2027, offering spiritual renewal and plenary indulgences to pilgrims.
In Italy, various initiatives are underway, including art exhibitions such as “Sulle tracce di Francesco” at Palazzo Sciarra Colonna in Rome, which explores the saint's iconographic evolution from the 13th century to the present. Other events include theatrical tours, such as the production “Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna,” and literary releases like Patrizia Cirulli’s “Caro Francesco ti scrivo.”
Local celebrations are occurring worldwide, from religious festivities and animal blessings in Brazil to community celebrations in Croatia, Spain, and Mexico. These events emphasize the saint's enduring legacy regarding peace, poverty, and ecological stewardship, connecting his medieval radicalism to contemporary social and environmental concerns.
