Saint Francis of Assisi 800th anniversary celebrations across Italy

Italy is preparing a wide range of cultural, religious, and sporting events to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi.

In Assisi, the “Assisi 4 Life” event will take place from September 19 to 21, 2026, focusing on the connection between sport, health, and the Franciscan theme of harmony between humanity and creation. Additionally, the “Cortile di Francesco” concluded its first phase in September, featuring discussions on peace and social reform.

Religious and historical commemorations are occurring across various regions. In Borgomanero, a conference will explore the historical figure of Francis beyond religious myth. In Ascoli, a week of spiritual and artistic events is planned for October. Other initiatives include the “I cammini di Francesco” walking itineraries in Arezzo and a traveling exhibition titled “Francesco Vive” in the Marche region.

Institutional involvement is significant, with Italian President Sergio Mattarella scheduled to attend celebrations in Assisi on October 4. Security and logistical coordination for these large-scale gatherings are being managed by local prefectures and regional authorities to accommodate pilgrims and international delegations.
