Saint Francis of Assisi's Porciúncula Indulgence Celebrated Aug 2

Each year on August 1‑2 the Catholic Church offers the plenary indulgence known as the Porciúncula or “Perdón de Asís.” The devotion traces back to a 1216 vision of Saint Francis of Assisi in the small chapel of Porciúncula near Assisi, where he asked the Lord to grant full remission of sins to all repentant visitors. Pope Honorius III approved the grant, extending the privilege from the original chapel to Franciscan churches worldwide.

In 2024 the celebration is highlighted in Spain and Brazil. In Brazil, Franciscan friar Luís Felipe Marques, adviser to the CNBB liturgical commission, urges the faithful to experience God’s mercy through the indulgence, linking it to the 800‑year jubilee of Saint Francis. The Church presents the indulgence as an invitation to spiritual renewal for those who receive the sacrament of penance.
