Porciúncula indulgence observance
Entities: Pope Honorius III · Saint Francis of Assisi · Fr. Alessio delle Cave · St. Francis of Assisi · Assisi
Overview
The Catholic Church annually grants a plenary indulgence known as the Porciúncula on August 1‑2, a devotion that traces back to Saint Francis of Assisi’s 1216 vision and was formalized by Pope Honorius III.
In 2024 the celebration was highlighted in Spain and Brazil. Brazilian Franciscan friar Luís Felipe Marques linked the indulgence to the 800‑year jubilee of Saint Francis and urged the faithful to experience God’s mercy through the rite.
By early August 2026 the Church reiterated the four conditions for receiving the indulgence—attending Mass and receiving Communion, making a sacramental confession, praying for the Pope’s intentions, and visiting a Franciscan church. The practice was described as available worldwide, with examples such as Florianópolis, Brazil, and a statement from Fr. Gonzalo Cateriano emphasizing its global accessibility.
In Assisi, the Feast of the Forgiveness was observed from noon on August 1 until midnight on August 2, marking the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis’s death. Clergy, including Fr. Alessio delle Cave, highlighted the same plenary indulgence, adding the recitation of the Creed and the Our Father to the required prayers. Pilgrims visited the Porziuncola or a Franciscan church, fulfilling the established conditions while participating in local liturgical celebrations.
