Saint Lucian of Antioch commemorated in Orthodox calendar

The Orthodox calendar commemorates Saint Lucian, a priest from Antioch, on October 15. Born in Samosata, Syria, to Christian parents, Lucian distributed his wealth to the poor following the death of his parents.

After studying under Macarius in Edessa, Lucian became a priest in Antioch, where he established schools for youth and worked on copying Holy Scripture into Greek. He was noted for his skill in rapid and beautiful calligraphy, using his work to support himself and the impoverished.

During the persecutions led by Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, Lucian traveled to Nicomedia to preach. While imprisoned, he produced a comprehensive manuscript of the Old and New Testaments, aiming to correct errors introduced by hurried scribes or heretical influences. Lucian died in prison after declaring his faith, and his body was reportedly brought to shore by a dolphin for burial. A church was later erected over his tomb by Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great.
