Saint Rose of Lima commemorated as patron of the Americas

The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Rose of Lima, the first person born in the Americas to be canonized. Born Isabel Flores de Oliva in 1586 in Peru, she is recognized as the patron saint of Latin America, the Philippines, and the West Indies.

A member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, Rose lived a life of intense prayer, penance, and service. She famously resided in a small hermitage in her family's garden, where she balanced contemplative life with manual labor to support her family. She was widely known for her devotion to the poor, indigenous populations, and the sick, often caring for them within her own home.

Religious celebrations for her feast day, observed on August 23 and August 30, involve widespread traditions across Peru and other regions. In Peru, festivities include processions, masses, and pilgrimages to various sanctuaries, such as Pelequén and Quives. These events draw large numbers of devotees who honor her legacy of humility and charity.
