Saints Adrian and Natalia commemorated on August 26
The Orthodox Church commemorates the feast day of the Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalia on August 26. The couple, who lived in Nicomedia during the reign of Emperor Maximian in the early 4th century, are celebrated for their devotion and martyrdom.
Adrian, a high-ranking official and initially a pagan, was moved by the courage of 23 Christians being persecuted for their faith. This led him to publicly declare his own Christianity, resulting in his imprisonment and eventual martyrdom. His wife, Natalia, who was a secret Christian, supported him through his suffering and also died for her faith.
In Romania, data from the General Directorate for Person Evidence indicates that nearly 500,000 people bear names associated with these saints, including Adrian, Adriana, Natalia, and Natașa. The day is widely observed as a name day celebration across various Orthodox traditions.
