Sakarya Battle 105th anniversary commemorations

Commemorations are being organized to mark the 105th anniversary of the Sakarya Battle, a decisive turning point in the Turkish War of Independence that took place between August 23 and September 13, 1921.

Historical accounts from the Sakaryamm Association highlight the strategic preparations of the era, noting how Greek forces attempted to cross the Sakarya River using boats as bridges. The accounts also detail the command structure led by Mustafa Kemal and İsmet Pasha at the Alagöz headquarters, emphasizing the importance of resource management, such as the instruction to use artillery shells sparingly.

In Ankara, the Metropolitan Municipality has scheduled a comprehensive program to honor the battle's significance. The events include a lecture by historian Dr. Selim Erdoğan regarding the battles in the Haymana and Polatlı regions, a ‘Republic Marches’ concert by the City Orchestra, and a guided tour titled ‘Step by Step Sakarya Battle’ to visit historical sites such as Mangal Mountain, Duatepe, and various martyr cemeteries.
