Sakarya Battle 105th anniversary commemorations

Turkey held various commemorations to mark the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Sakarya, a significant event in the Turkish War of Independence.

In Ankara, the Metropolitan Municipality organized programs including historical lectures by Dr. Selim Erdoğan regarding the Haymana and Polatlı regions, as well as concerts featuring ‘Republic Marches’. Other planned activities included guided tours of historical sites such as Mangal Mountain and Duatepe. These activities aimed to deepen the public's understanding of the battle's strategic importance, which halted enemy advances and shifted military momentum from defense to offense.

In Yozgat, the Governorship issued a formal message honoring the victory, describing the battle as a demonstration of the nation’s determination to protect its independence and paying tribute to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the fallen martyrs. Historians have noted that the victory boosted national morale and strengthened the international legitimacy of the Ankara Government.

Historical context surrounding the anniversary highlights the crisis that preceded the victory. Following the Battle of Eskişehir, the Turkish army retreated 100 kilometers east of the Sakarya River, causing tension within Parliament as Greek forces advanced. To manage the crisis, Parliament appointed Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as Commander-in-Chief on August 5, 1921. Atatürk subsequently issued the ‘Tekalif-i Milliye Orders’ to mobilize national resources. During the combat that began in August 1921, Atatürk issued a decisive strategic command on August 26: ‘There is no line of defense, there is a zone of defense. That zone is the entire motherland.’ This directive fundamentally altered the military strategy by mandating that no territory be abandoned without sacrifice.
