Sakarya begins urban transformation in Tığcılar neighborhood

Demolition has begun on the first buildings of the Tığcılar Mahallesi 1st Stage Urban Transformation Project in the Adapazarı district of Sakarya. This project targets the renewal of 718 independent units, specifically addressing structures that sustained damage during the 1999 Marmara earthquake.

A ceremony marking the start of the demolition was attended by Sakarya Governor Rahmi Doğan, Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar, and various political representatives. Governor Doğan emphasized the necessity of building on solid ground to prevent earthquake fatalities, noting that the state has successfully delivered 450,000 housing units across 11 cities following the February 6 earthquakes.

Mayor Yusuf Alemdar stated that the goal is to create a resilient urban environment with an emphasis on social and green spaces to prevent future loss of life. This initiative is recognized as the first neighborhood-based transformation effort in Sakarya following the Marmara earthquake.
