Turkey urban transformation and earthquake resilience
Overview
Turkey is implementing various urban transformation and reconstruction projects to modernize housing and increase earthquake resilience across several cities.
In Istanbul, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has completed 1,642 housing units in the Maltepe, Gaziosmanpaşa, and Zeytinburnu districts, which are being handed over to owners. In İnegöl, the Turgutalp Neighborhood Urban Transformation Project has reached a milestone with the groundbreaking of its second and third stages, a large-scale development expected to include hundreds of residences and commercial units.
In Sakarya, the Tığcılar Urban Transformation Project has officially entered its first phase with the commencement of demolitions in the Adapazarı district. This neighborhood-based initiative aims to renew 718 units, specifically targeting structures damaged during the 1999 Marmara earthquake. Sakarya Governor Rahmi Doğan noted that the state has delivered 450,000 housing units across 11 cities following the February 6 earthquakes, while Mayor Yusuf Alemdar emphasized creating a resilient environment with social and green spaces.
In Tokat, demolition has also commenced as part of a project covering the Erenler, Kâbe-i Mescid, Cami-i Kebir, and Semerkant neighborhoods. Mayor Mehmet Kemal Yazıcıoğlu stated the area faces risks from earthquakes and rockfalls. The project aims to develop 262 residential units across two stages. Beyond housing, the plan includes infrastructure improvements, such as a 1.5-kilometer road connecting the university hospital to the ring road, and the reorganization of areas around Tokat Castle into green zones and event spaces.
