Salamanca unveils senior skill workshops and anti‑elder‑abuse campaign
The Salamanca City Council has launched a new edition of its Domestic Skills Programme for residents aged 60 and over. The initiative offers practical courses in Basic Cooking and Home Maintenance and Repairs, with a total of 36 places split among three municipal centres. Sessions run from early June to late September and aim to boost personal autonomy, safety and environmental awareness among seniors living alone or caring for others.
In parallel, the council introduced a campaign titled “No lo silencies, cuéntalo” to raise awareness of gender‑based violence against women aged 65 and older. The effort highlights that women in this age group account for about 3 % of the municipality’s gender‑violence cases, with 15 victims recorded last year, and cites a national survey indicating that more than 23 % of older women have experienced some form of abuse. The campaign uses radio, TV, press and outdoor media to encourage reporting and to promote available legal and support services.
