Salcombe man tackles escaped emu in viral video

A video of a man tackling an escaped emu in Salcombe has gained significant online attention, surpassing two million views. The incident, filmed by James Barker on the A381, shows a struggle between the man and the bird, which has been named ‘Side Neck’. During the encounter, the emu reportedly headbutted the man before running away and returning to its original location.

Following the viral clip, Kingsbridge Police provided guidance regarding emu ownership. While a permit is not required to keep an emu as a pet, authorities noted that owners must provide sufficient space, proper nutrition, and protection from extreme weather to comply with the 2006 Animal Welfare Act. Experts noted that emu aggression can stem from breeding season hormonal spikes, territorial defense, or lack of social boundaries with humans.
