Escaped emu encounter in Devon
Overview
An escaped emu, named ‘Side Neck’, became the subject of a viral video after an encounter on a rural road in Salcombe, Devon. Footage filmed by James Barker shows a man attempting to restrain the bird for approximately 20 to 30 seconds on the A381. The struggle concluded when the emu headbutted the man before fleeing back into a gated property.
Following the video gaining over two million views, Kingsbridge Police issued guidance regarding emu ownership. While no permit is required to keep an emu as a pet, authorities emphasized that owners must comply with the 2006 Animal Welfare Act by providing adequate space, nutrition, and weather protection. Experts suggested the bird's aggression could be attributed to territorial defense, hormonal spikes during breeding season, or a lack of social boundaries with humans.
