Ruggi Hospital in Salerno performs complex cardiac and neurological surgeries

Medical teams at the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona hospital in Salerno have successfully performed two highly complex surgical procedures.

In one case, a cardiac surgery team led by Professor Enrico Coscioni performed a triple coronary bypass and a TAVI aortic valve replacement while the patient’s heart was still beating. The procedure was necessitated by severe aortic stenosis, extensive coronary disease, and a rare condition known as ‘porcelain aorta,’ where the aorta is heavily calcified, increasing the risk of stroke during traditional surgery.

In a separate neurological breakthrough, a team led by Dr. Daniele Romano successfully removed four cerebral aneurysms in a single session from a 77-year-old patient. The aneurysms were discovered incidentally during diagnostic tests for unrelated health issues. The endovascular embolization was completed in one sitting to minimize anesthesia risks and ensure a faster recovery.
