Cerebral aneurysm treatments in Campania hospitals

Medical facilities in the Campania region of Italy have reported successful complex neurosurgical interventions for cerebral aneurysms.

In Caserta, the Sant'Anna e San Sebastiano hospital utilized a new biplane angiography system and interventional neuroradiology suite to perform an endovascular procedure to close a distal middle cerebral artery aneurysm. This facility is being established as a level-II hub within the Campania stroke network.

In Salerno, specialists at the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona hospital performed an endovascular embolization on a 77-year-old patient to treat four aneurysms discovered incidentally. Dr. Daniele Romano, Director of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, characterized the simultaneous treatment of four aneurysms as an “exceptional event”.

Further reports from the Ruggi d'Aragona hospital highlight the facility's capacity for high-complexity procedures. In addition to the neurological work led by Dr. Romano, a cardiac surgery team led by Professor Enrico Coscioni successfully performed a triple coronary bypass and a TAVI aortic valve replacement while the patient’s heart was still beating. This specific cardiac intervention was required due to severe aortic stenosis and a rare condition known as ‘porcelain aorta’, where heavy calcification increases stroke risks during traditional surgery.
